Prayer of the Day

Twentieth Sunday of the Year

August 14th, 2016
"Let us not lose sight of Jesus, who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection." Hebrews 12 : 1
Caroline C

Sometimes we can domesticate Christianity by choosing to meditate on passages from scripture that make us feel good.  Fortunately the passages chosen for the Sunday Liturgy give us a more accurate picture of the true price of becoming a follower of Christ.  Today’s Gospel (Luke 12 : 49-53) leaves no room for complacency.  Anyone who truly follows Jesus can expect ridicule and rejection.  Jesus found his path very difficult but with his eyes fixed on the Father he choose to go forward despite continued opposition from the religious leaders.   True to his mission to reveal the Father’s love for humanity Jesus turned their spiritual certainties upside down.  He knew that their opposition would ultimately lead to the cross but he also knew that it was only through the acceptance of this suffering that humanity could be brought to God.  For us, as for Jesus, there is only one path, the way of the cross.  Christianity demands that we die to ourselves, our ego, in order to receive new life from God.

Jesus you are the way, the truth and the life. Help me to keep my eyes firmly fixed on you. Amen
