Prayer of the Day

Leprosy was one of the most feared diseases in ancient times. It began small but soon spread, rotting the victim’s extremities and issuing a pungent smell. Lepers were forced by Jewish law to live apart from the rest of the community. They were left to die a slow painful death. Even though lepers were not allowed come close to healthy people the leper in the gospel came up to Jesus. We can imagine the crowd dispersing in horror as he cried “Unclean! Unclean!” His words to Jesus were filled with faith. “If you want to, you can cure me.” He placed the matter in the Lord’s hands and left it up to him. The heart of Jesus was overflowing with compassion. He was not repulsed by the man’s appearance or by his smell. We are told that he stretched out his hand and touched the man. In that touch Jesus healed the leper. We need to come to Jesus with the humility of the leper so that he may touch and heal us.
