"How shall I look again upon your holy Temple? The waters closed in over me; the deep surrounded me." Jonah : 2 : 4

There is Jonah feeling sorry for himself. He has found himself cast out of the boat into the jaws of the whale. He is being punished by the Lord for disobeying His command. The mission God gave him was to go and preach repentance to the Ninevites. But Jonah knowing the all merciful God would forgive the Ninevites anyway, decided to run away from God. So he got on a ship going to Tarshish. How naïve of Jonah to think he could ever hide himself from God! As soon as he boarded the ship, God sent a mighty wind. A great storm arose and the ship was on the verge of breaking up. The sailors drew lots to see who was the cause of the storm. They discovered it was Jonah and forthwith threw him into the sea. Immediately the storm ended. So Jonah prayed to Yahweh who heard him and told the whale to cast him on dry land. Eventually Jonah went and preached to the Ninevites; “whereupon they did penance in sackcloth and ashes, from the King on his throne to the lowest of his minions.” So God spared their city. Jonah was furiously disgusted. He said to the Lord; “That is why I fled to Tarshish. I knew you are a gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in love and ready to forgive the Ninevites.” This story reveals God’s merciful love for his people despite our weaknesses and sinfulness. God does not will the death of the sinner, but that he live and repent and turn back to the Lord, his ever loving God.

"In you O Lord, we put our trust, let us never be confounded." Amen
