Prayer of the Day
Daily PrayerOctober 26th, 2015
The healing of the woman, infirm and bound by an affliction which had rendered her bent over for eighteen years, is surely a reason to rejoice and celebrate. With a command and a touch, the crippled woman is set free. She straightens up and praises God. Her new posture expresses the new life she has received. The Synagogue ruler, twisted by his own devotion to the law, refuses to share in the joy. He insists that if people want healing, they can have it as long as it is not on the Sabbath. Jesus immediately challenges this hypocrisy, pointing out that whereas they show compassion to their animals, they deny it to human beings. Jesus continues this ministry of healing today through the Church in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of Anointing. The same grace and power which raised the crippled woman to new life, can do the same for us. The grace of Baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit have set us free, and released us from the law of sin and death. We too can praise God and walk upright before our Heavenly Father.
Lord Jesus, we rejoice in the splendid deeds you perform for us. May we always trust in your mercy to heal our souls and to let us live freely in you. Amen
