"I am a voice that cries in the wilderness, make a straight way for the Lord." John 1 : 23
John the Baptist

Here,  we have John the Baptist speaking to the priests and Levites from Jerusalem who come to John to ask him who gave him authority to baptize.  John replied that he only baptized with water,  but a greater than he was coming who would baptize with the Holy Spirit.  Next day Jesus appeared at the Jordan river.  John recognised Him and pointed Jesus out to his two disciples who immediately left John and followed Jesus.  Jesus turned around and saw them following Him.  He asked them what they wanted.  They answered; “Rabbi (meaning teacher) where do you live?” Jesus replied; “Come and see.”   They went with Him and stayed with Him the rest of that day.  One of these two was Andrew,  the brother of Simon Peter.  The humble John the Baptist fades into the background and leaves the stage to Jesus.  John said; “He must increase,  I must decrease.”

Now the mission of Jesus begins.  This is the mission He spoke of to Mary and Joseph when they found Him in the Temple speaking to the Doctors of the Law.  He said; “did you not know that I must be busy with my Fathers’ affairs?”  The Light of God has come into our world and the darkness cannot overcome it.   Jesus said; “They will know you are my disciples if you love one another.”

Lord, help us to live together in love and tenderness as disciples of Jesus, the Light of the world. Amen
