"Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them." Mark 2 : 19

Life with Jesus is always something new and exciting.  Today we read of an incident in which Jesus was criticized for failing to teach his followers to fast.  Apparently  the Pharisees and the disciples of John were fasting,  but Jesus’ disciples were not.   Jesus took this opportunity to teach more precisely about his person,  by alluding to himself as the bridegroom.  It is the Spirit who refreshes and renews our thirst for the coming again of Jesus – our heavenly bridegroom.

The week of prayer for Christian Unity begins today and lasts until 25th January,  the feast of the conversion of St. Paul.  The call to renewal and reform will remain as long as the Church continues her pilgrim path on earth.  In his encyclical of 1995,  St. John Paul II states that love gives rise to the desire for unity.  Love builds communion between individuals and between communities.  This love finds its more complete expression in common prayer.  When Christians pray together,  the goal of unity seems closer.  Particularly important is common prayer,  the prayerful union of those who gather together around Christ himself.  “In the fellowship of prayer,  Christ is truly present;  he prays in us,  with us and for us.”

Lord Jesus, thank you for the great love you show us. Amen
