"Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" Mark 2 : 24

Today’s Gospel illustrates how minor the issues that led some people to see Jesus as a conspirator against the Jewish establishment.  The Pharisees continue to search for ways in which they find fault with Jesus and his disciples.  In today’s Reading,  they criticize their actions on the Sabbath day,  but Jesus clarifies their misunderstandings.  His teaching is clear;  the Sabbath was made for the human person,  and not vice versa.  The error of the Pharisees was that in their desire to please God,  they forgot God and focused their attention on appearing righteous.  We need to guard against this sort of attitude.   The Sabbath was God’s way of drawing his people into a relationship with himself by making time itself a means of relating to him.   Jesus is not only the Lord of the Sabbath,  he is also the Lord of our lives and the one we should serve and follow.  Our vocation is an invitation to live in the power of the Holy Spirit,  and to radiate the love of God,  thus fulfilling the law of love.

Lord Jesus, may I seek to be governed by love than by duty. Amen
