"Pray then in this way: Our Father…" Matthew 6 : 9
Word of God

The Lord’s prayer – the ‘Our Father’ is offered as a sample of how we ought to pray. Most of its phrases have a close parallel in Jewish prayers of the time.

The first three petitions are addressed directly to God: they pray for the coming of God’s Kingdom. They ask that God let the time come when He will be recognised as the Holy One by all creation, that the fullness of his kingship be revealed to all creation and that the perfection with which His Will is done in heaven should extend to earth also.

The next petitions ask for physical and spiritual well being in the difficult period before the fullness of God’s Kingdom. They ask that God would provide the bread we need today – whatever form that bread might take, e.g. the bread to satisfy physical hunger as well as the hunger for well-being, for comfort in times of trial, the hunger for compassion etc.

They ask that the forgiveness we receive from God may lead us to forgive those who have wronged us and that in the time of testing accompanying the coming of God’s Kingdom we may not fall prey to the evil one. It makes our willingness to forgive one another the necessary condition for God’s willingness to forgive us.

Lord, may I remember to include in my prayer all those who hunger and thirst. Amen
