Prayer of the Day
Daily PrayerAugust 7th, 2015
Today’s Gospel story is one of the most dramatic in all of Matthew. Jesus has been with his disciples for some time. They have listened to him speak and preach, and they have watched him perform great miracles. When Jesus put the question; “Who do people say I am?” to his disciples, they gave him a variety of answers. Some think you are John the Baptist, some Elijah, others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. “But you, yourselves, who do you say that I am ?” Peter answered for all of them; “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” On hearing this, Jesus tells Simon that he is the rock on which he will build his Church. This image is one of security, stability and strength. Jesus is like a wise man who builds his house on rock so that no amount of buffeting by the wind can make it collapse. Peter can only be a rock if he depends on Jesus, the true rock. That same question is asked of us today, and our answer is crucial because it will tell us an awful lot about the kind of people we are. If Jesus is for us the way, the truth and the life, then that must shape and form the lives we lead, the values we live by and the decisions we make.
Lord, your scriptures are treasure beyond price and your Eucharist is the greatest gift we can possess. Amen
