Prayer of the Day

Daily Prayer

"“While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?’ But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, ‘Do not fear, only believe’." Mark 5 : 35

In today’s Gospel we read an account of two healings. On his way to heal the young daughter of Jairus, Jesus heals a woman who had been afflicted for a long time from a haemorrhage.  This woman emerges from the crowd following Jesus, because she was bold and had a faith not to be denied.  Her healing is unique in that it takes place solely at her initiative. As Jesus approached the house of Jairus, news came that the little girl had died. Jairus had faith in Jesus when his daughter was ‘at the point of death’ and, now that she has died, Jairus has to have faith in Jesus’ power to raise the dead. Jesus declares that death is not the end of everything but only a ‘sleep’ from which one is awakened at the resurrection. For Mark and his readers Jesus is the Son of God already mediating the power of his resurrection.

Jesus’ words to Jairus in the midst of crisis speak to us as well. “Don’t be afraid: just believe.” In Jesus’ mind there was both hope and promise. The next time you feel hopeless and afraid, look at your problem from Jesus’ point of view.  He is the source of all hope and promise.

Prayer Jesus, I believe you can bring to life in me what seems to be dead. Amen
