Prayer of the Day

In today’s gospel (Mark 10: 17-27) a rich young man comes up to Jesus and asks him what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus goes through the commandments with him. The young man tells Jesus that he has always kept the commandments. And we are told that Jesus looked at him with love and then invited him to sell everything he owns and follow him. Unfortunately the young man declined the offer and went away sad because he was not prepared to go that far. He was too attached to his wealth. Any attachment whether it be money, power, pleasure, prestige or success can prevent us from following Jesus. In yesterday’s gospel (Matt 6:24-34) Jesus said that “no one can be a slave of two masters – you cannot be a slave of both God and money” and that goes for every other attachment also. The rich young man didn’t realise how attached he was to his wealth until the moment of his encounter with Jesus.
