Prayer of the Day

Daily Prayer

March 6th, 2014
""If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."" Luke 9 : 23

Today the liturgy presents us with stark choices.  Moses sets before the people life or death.  If they keep the commandments then they will have life if not “death and disaster” (Deut. 30:15-20).  There are no half-measures.  These are the terms of the covenant made between God and God’s people.    In today’s gospel (Lk. 9: 22-25) Jesus leaves us in no doubt about the cost of discipleship.    To take up our cross every day is a choice which makes challenging demands on us.  It requires a heart utterly sincere in its desire for God.  It involves a dying to self – death to the ego.    On our own we are totally unable to do this but with God everything is possible.  Faithful listening to the voice of God in our hearts urging us to make small unselfish choices every hour of every day will gradually bear fruit.  His voice telling us to be patient and kind when we want to be the exact opposite; to put up with boredom without complaint … We must make an effort because Jesus said: “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest “(John 12:24)

Prayer "Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin." (Psalm 50) Amen
