Prayer of the Day
Daily PrayerJune 12th, 2014
God’s commandment is that we love one another. Love is the fulfilling of the Law. God tells us that his yoke is sweet and his burden light. Jesus is not like the Pharisees whom he condemned for their unjust laws which they forced on the people. When we commit sin, we are erecting a barrier between ourselves and God. We are hardening our hearts. Sin is like a leprosy that can destroy us. If we turn our back on God, we will be the most miserable of creatures. We are ruining our own lives and the lives of others.
However, God loves the sinner and as the Good Shepherd, he goes everywhere in search of the last one. He never rests until he has it back in the fold. Help is always at hand for us sinners. Think of the Prodigal Son who got such a welcome from God, his Father. Fr. Daniel O’Leary says; “There is no sin, loss, betrayal, shame or despair that is final.” No, the gift of the Spirit overcomes all evil. Scripture tells us there is more rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner who returns to God than over the other ninety nine who have never strayed.
Scripture is full of examples of Christ’s loving forgiveness of sinners. Think of the paralytic let down from the roof in front of Jesus. Jesus told him his sins were forgiven. There was the woman taken in adultery. Jesus told her to “go and sin no more.” There was Mary Magdalene out of whom Jesus drove seven devils. Jesus is the friend of sinners. He is our friend always ready to give us a helping hand. If only we could understand the depth of God’s love for his people, the good, the not so good, the just and the unjust. All are his children.
