Prayer of the Day
Daily PrayerSeptember 1st, 2014
The structure of this particular passage is very carefully planned, and reminds us of the importance of how we read or proclaim the Scriptures.
Jesus was in the synagogue, he got up, he was handed the scroll, he unrolled it, he found the place and read the text – (a section from the prophet Isaiah), he rolled up the scroll, handed it back, he sat down in the synagogue.
The reader of Luke, enlightened by the Baptismal manifestation of Jesus, will understand without a shadow of doubt, that God’s herald, anointed by the Spirit, is Jesus himself and that the mission proclaimed in the text will be his/hers also.
Jesus concludes by saying, “today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus invites his listeners to recognise the newness which has broken into their lives. The people of Nazareth see Jesus only as “the son of Joseph.” They fail to see in Jesus, the prophet proclaimed by Isaiah in passage he had read for them.
