""This hoard of yours, whose will it be?"" Luke 12 : 20

In today’s gospel a man in the crowd asks Jesus to intervene in a property row between him and his brother.  The man was probably a younger son who feels that he has been cheated by his elder brother.  In Israel the first-born son received double the inheritance of any of his younger brothers.  Sometimes younger sons brought the matter to court.  The court usually consisted of elders of the village who would rule on the issue.  The man in question was obviously trying to get Jesus to act as judge and side with him.    Jesus will have none of it.    Instead he uses the opportunity for instruction: “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions”   To illustrate his point Jesus told them the parable of the rich fool.  The man in this parable is totally self-centred.  He foolishly believes that an accumulation of wealth will make his life secure.    Instead of sharing his surplus grain with those in need he plans to build bigger barns so he can hoard his grain.  He forgets that his riches and everything in life are gifts from God to be used to build up the kingdom of God.  So that night God decides to take back the gift of life from him.  The man’s riches are of no more use to him.

Prayer Lord Jesus teach me to use my gifts to build up your kingdom. Amen
