The proof that the Pharisees really love money can be found in St. Matthew’s Gospel, when Jesus corrects them for saying that if one swears by the altar it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the alter, one is binding. He exposes their wrong sense of values, and this does not endear Him to them. Here Jesus presents them as slaves to wealth who are unable to serve God. Unfortunately hearing this does not lead to repentance. Instead, they sneer at Him. In the end they provide Judas with soldiers and guards to arrest Jesus. Truly, the love of money is the root of all evil. If you have honestly earned your money, you are usually careful how you spend it. If your money is ill gotten, the chances are you will spend it carelessly.
