Prayer of the Day

Why did the Pharisees in today’s Gospel ask Jesus for a sign from Heaven? He had only just fed 4,000 people, using seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. Even if they had not yet heard of the miracle, the Pharisees must have been aware that Jesus had healed sick people, raised a dead young girl to life, but their motive was to test him. At the heart of the Pharisees’ problem was unbelief, a lack of faith. Faith is not only a supernatural gift, but it is also a personal act, a free response to the initiative of God who reveals himself. We should cherish this gift of faith and thank God for his generosity. The purpose of faith is that one day we will see God face to face. This vision of God will fill us with bliss and joy, causing us to give praise and glory to God forever.
