""Suddenly Jesus met them and said; 'Greetings.'"" Matthew 28 : 9
The_Empty_Tomb.jpg

It was early on Sunday morning that a group of women who had been close followers of Jesus went to the tomb with spices to anoint his body.  Imagine how shocked and frightened they must have been to find the stone rolled away and the tomb empty.  But they were even more astonished when they saw an Angel who told them that Jesus had risen from the dead.  And there was still more to come for as they ran from the empty tomb to tell the Good News to the disciples Jesus himself appeared to them.

Matthew describes the Angel with his “face like lightening and his robe white as snow” (Matthew 28 : 4) but neither he nor any of the other evangelists even describe the Risen Lord.  he was the same yet different.  His salutation was very ordinary “greetings.”  Like we might say ‘hello’ to a neighbour or friend.  These women didn’t seem to have any difficulty believing that their Lord had risen and was still with them.  Their first reaction was to pay him homage.  Then having listened to him they set off at once to obey his orders – to make know his Resurrection to the Apostles.

As baptised Christians we are all called to imitate the faith and enthusiasm of these women – their first evangelists.  We can be sure that our Risen Lord will help us in our mission.  Let us listen to Pope Francis as he writes in his Apostolic Exhortation ‘The Joy of the Gospel,’  ‘Christ,  risen and glorified,  is the wellspring of our hope,  and he will not deprive us of the help we need to carry out the mission which he has entrusted to us.’  (No. 275)

Prayer Lord we ask you to fill us with your Holy Spirit that like the first disciples we may proclaim the Good News of your Resurrection with boldness and joy. Amen
