Prayer of the Day
Feast of Bl. Dominic Collins, MartyrOctober 31st, 2015
In the Mediterranean culture, which gives importance to “honour,” people are taught to stay behind their rightful status, which will allow the host to invite one to take a higher position. In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ injunction on choosing the lower place is not about proper behaviour. Instead, he is speaking about the right attitude demanded by the Kingdom of God; the humble will be exalted while the proud will be humbled. Humility is not about thinking less about ourselves; it is thinking more about God and serving others. The more we raise our hearts and minds to God, the more readily we forget ourselves and concern ourselves with the needs of others. The humble person is the realistic person because he or she wants God to be glorified and given praise because he is both Creator and Lord. So perhaps the key to humility is not to strive to be humble, but to strive to give God honour, glory and praise.
Lord God, love of the poor and Father to the orphan, make us humble of heart. Amen
