Prayer of the Day

Feast of Corpus Christi

May 29th, 2016
"This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 1 Corinthians 11 : 24

‘On the same night that he was betrayed,  the Lord Jesus took some bread,  and thanked God for it and broke it,  and he said; ‘This is my body which is for you….’ (1 Cor. 11 : 24)

Today we celebrate the beautiful feast of the Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ.  St. Paul in writing to the Corinthians about this wonderful Sacrament begins by stating that it was on that very night when he was betrayed that Jesus gave himself for us.  To have died for us at any time would have been a tremendous act of love but to give himself to us at this hour of betrayal shows a love beyond our understanding.

No wonder St. John Paul II in his encyclical letter on the Eucharist writes; ‘What more could Jesus have done for us ?’  Truly,  in the Eucharist he shows us a love which goes ‘to the end,’ (John 13 : 1)  ‘a love that knows no measure.’ (Ecclesia de Eucharistia  Ch. 1 : 11)

As we reflect on this great mystery today,  let us ask for the grace to let go of any hurts or grudges which we carry so that with a grateful heart we too can allow ourselves to be broken for others even  those who may have caused us suffering.  May each celebration of the Eucharist give us strength,  consolation and support as we strive to be Eucharistic people witnessing to Christ by our lives of loving service to others.

'Come then, Good Shepherd, bread divine, still show to us thy mercy sign; Oh, feed us still, still keep us thine; so may we see thy glories shine in fields of immortality.' Amen (St. Thomas Aquinas)
