Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Angela Merici

January 27th, 2014
""Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness."" Mark 3 : 29

Having been accused of being “demon possessed,”  the Lord tells a parable,  the punch line of which contains a terrible warning; “Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness.”   Jesus’ public ministry illustrates time and time again the reality of the demonic realm and his power over it.  Because of the victory Jesus won for us on the Cross,  we can overcome the devil.  The mystic Julian of Norwich wrote “The devil is overcome by the precious Passion of Christ. The weapons of our spiritual battle are the Blood of Christ,  the Cross of Christ and the name of Christ.” Jesus is besieged by those who resist his words and actions,  and the people accuse him of being possessed by Satan.  But Jesus is clear about who he is and what he is doing.

St. Peter,  who knew that the gates of hell would not prevail against the Kingdom of God,  gave the following counsel when dealing with the devil. “Be sober,  be watchful,  your adversary prowls around like a roaring lion,  seeking someone to devour.  Resist him,  firm in your faith.” (Peter 5 : 8)

Today is the feast of St. Angela Merici,  founder of the Ursulines.  She devoted herself to Christian education,  based on love,  kindness and firmness,  and concern for the individual.

Prayer Grant me the grace always to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in my own life, in the life of others and in the life of the Church. Amen
