Prayer of the Day
Feast of St. Bartholomew, ApostleAugust 24th, 2016
Bartholomew is identified with Nathanael, one of the first Apostles to be chosen. It was Philip who told Nathanael about Jesus, describing him as ‘the son of Joseph from Nazareth.’ (John 1 : 45) Nathanael wasn’t too impressed with Jesus’ background but he soon changed his mind when he met Jesus himself. It was one of those rare encounters when two people look each other in the eye and see into the heart. Jesus saw in Nathanael ‘a true Israelite, incapable of deceit.’ Nathanael saw the one all Israel had been waiting for, their king indeed but much more, someone sent from Heaven, the Son of God.
As we reflect on this beautiful story today, let us not forget the part played by Philip in it all. Had Philip not gone to find his friend and share with him the good news about Jesus, would Nathanael ever have met the Lord? Is there someone with whom I could share the joy of the Gospel?
Lord we thank you for parents, teachers, priests, who have made you known to us and helped us to deepen that loving relationship. Give us the enthusiasm to make you known and loved. Amen
