Prayer of the Day
Feast of St. Bernard, Abbot & Doctor of the ChurchAugust 20th, 2016
Jesus was very critical of the religious leaders of his time. They were puffed up with pride. For centuries they were specially prepared by God, through Moses and the prophets, to welcome Jesus as the Son of God and to encourage people to follow him. Instead they saw him as a threat to their way of life so they tried to discredit him in every way. Jesus tells the people that these religious leaders have authority because they occupy the seat of Moses so they have to be listened to but unfortunately they don’t lead by example. The Pharisees were pious Jews who tried to live all six- hundred precepts of the Law to perfection. Their problem was that they wanted to be admired and looked up to and their judgements were very harsh. Let us look into our own hearts to see if we behave just as they did. Do we require admiration and praise for every little good deed we perform? Do we judge others harshly just as they did? Do we prevent others from getting closer to God because of our bad example?
Loving God help us to be authentic in our prayer life and in our everyday lives that others may not be scandalised by us. Amen
