Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Bruno, Founder of the Carthusian Order

October 6th, 2015
"Mary has chosen the better part. it is not to be taken from her." Luke 10 : 38

This dinner party seems to have been a bit of a disaster. Strange that Christ should come alone to the house of two women. Mary just sat at the feet of Jesus lost in wonder. There was a great affinity between Jesus and Mary. Mary was probably in an ecstasy. This is the same Mary who poured the precious sweet smelling ointment over the feet of Jesus on the eve of his last journey to Jerusalem. Suddenly, the atmosphere is tense. Martha starts complaining about her sister Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus instead of helping her with the serving. She tells Jesus to ask Mary to come and help. Mary only wanted to listen to every word Jesus spoke, and to ponder on his words in her heart. Jesus took Mary’s part. He said; “Only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part and it is not to be taken from her.” We live in a world where there is too much noise, too much busyness. We have to keep rushing around. There is no time to think of what really matters in life. Like Mary at the feet of Jesus, we also need a quiet time with Jesus – a time for prayer in our lives. We must make time to stop and think what life is all about. Let us pause now and then to admire the beauties of nature – God’s handiwork! Notice the flowers of the field, the running streams and listen to the bird song in the air. To call God our Father is to acknowledge Him as our Creator, the source of our life here and hereafter. God is our first beginning and our last end.

May the grace of God be always with us so that we may never forget the treasures we have received through Jesus Christ and his Spirit. Amen
