Prayer of the Day
Feast of St. Davnet, VirginJune 14th, 2016
If we give to those who will give back, and lend to those who will repay us, and do good to those who will do good to us, what grace is there in that? This type of reciprocity is predictable and purely human: as the Gospel says, “Even sinners do this.” (Luke 6:32)
The Spirit gets things done without calling attention to itself. It is unobtrusive. Some religious hypocrites, like the Pharisee in the Gospel of Luke, boast of their good deeds: they blow trumpets, stand on street corners (Matt. 6) and look glum, so that all will know.
There is a deep need in all of us to have our good actions applauded, even publicised. We cannot stop talking about what the effort costs us – in terms of time, money and irritation. It is hard to imagine not taking advantage of every opportunity to promote ourselves!
Jesus, help me to give generously without counting the cost. Amen
