Prayer of the Day
Feast of St. DominicAugust 8th, 2014
Becoming a disciple of Jesus is not just a feel good experience. There are hard demands involved like putting aside our innate selfishness for the sake of others. Sometimes it involves being rejected and misunderstood as Jesus himself was. Yet Jesus continually calls each one of us into discipleship and promises to be with us every step of the way. St. Paul gives us an insight into his response to the loving call of Jesus. “I believe nothing can happen that will outweigh the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything … All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and to share his sufferings by reproducing the pattern if his death … I am still running, trying to capture the prize for which Christ captured me.” (Philippians 3:8,10, 12)
Today is the feast of St. Dominic (1170-1221) who founded the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans. The spread of the popular devotion, the rosary, is attributed to the Dominicans. Tradition has it that in 1214 Dominic had an apparition of Our Lady who told him to pray the rosary as a weapon against the Albigensian Heresy.
