Prayer of the Day
Feast of St. Gregory the Great, Pope & Doctor of the ChurchSeptember 3rd, 2016
What does the commandment “keep holy the Sabbath” require of us? The “Sabbath rest” was meant to be a time to remember and celebrate God’s goodness and the goodness of his work, both in creation and redemption. It was a day set apart for the praise of God, his work of creation, and his saving actions on our behalf. Pope Francis “It is meant to be a day which heals our relationships with God, with ourselves, with others and with the world. We are called to include in our work a dimension of receptivity and gratuity, which is different from mere inactivity”. Laudato Si’ No. 237
Pope St. Gregory, 540 – 604, was Pope of the Catholic Church from 3 September 590 until his death. Gregory is famous for the first recorded large scale missions from Rome to convert a pagan people to Christianity. Gregory is also well known for his writings, which were more prolific than those of any of his predecessors as Pope.
Lord, may I honour you in my work and in my rest and treat my neighbour with respect and kindness. Keep me free from a critical and intolerant spirit that I may seek the good of my neighbour in all situations. Amen
