"The Israelites were fruitful and prolific." Exodus 1 : 8

The Book of Exodus opens with a challenge to God from Pharaoh,  King of Egypt.  This is God versus Pharaoh,  a divine ha, ha!   However,  the more the King oppressed the Israelites,  the more they increased in numbers.  We can’t condemn Pharaoh if we ourselves behave in exactly the same way.  Do we secure wealth and riches for our selves at the expense of the hard work of the poor?  Are we not crushing the poor on our way to wealth and fame?   We ignore the pain,  suffering and oppression we are causing them when we blindly attain our successful goal.  We blissfully close our eyes to our own despicable behaviour.  In our eyes the poor don’t matter.  They are there to be ill-used.  But the mills of God grind slowly but surely.  The day of reckoning comes and God is always on the side of the poor and the oppressed.

Prayer

Let us pray :- Oh, God of mercy, you came to the aid of the oppressed Israelites with strong armed mighty strength. Help us to oppose those who exploit the poor and defenceless. May we make your world a just one for all your people. Amen
