Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Hilary

January 13th, 2014
"“When the Sabbath came, Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”" Mark 1 : 21

On the Sabbath the congregation regularly assembled for the prayers, Scripture reading and exposition or commentary in which everyone was permitted to participate. Jesus conformed to the ordinary religious life of his people. The people were astonished at the teaching of Jesus. References to the amazement of the people at the words of Jesus are a striking feature of Mark’s Gospel. Jesus’ proclamation of the nearness of God’s reign or kingdom made a deep impression on the people of Capernaum. In the way Jesus taught, the people sensed a claim to a superior, personal authority. This set Jesus apart from the scribes who spoke with an authority outside themselves, quoting from well-known rabbis to give their words more authority. Jesus did not have that need.

Prayer Lord, may I never cease to wonder at your love for me! Amen
