Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Jerome Emiliani and St. Josephine Bakhita

February 8th, 2014
"“As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.”" Mark 6 : 34

The crowd before Jesus was as pitiful as a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Jesus was the shepherd who could teach the people what they needed to know and keep them from straying from God.

Compassion (suffering along with) has a way of bringing us close to Jesus on the cross. We reach out to others by our desire to share in their pain and their suffering. Our desire to shoulder part of another’s pain or sickness is a Christ-like gesture. Jesus took upon himself the pain and suffering of the world. He invites us to come to him – “come to me all you who labour and are overburdened and I will give you rest.” Compassion that frees us from a rigid interpretation of the law is an expression of our desire to share in the Paschal mystery. We are freed from selfishness and narrowness when we move out of our comfort zone to life the poor, the lonely and those who suffer.

Prayer Lord, may I always remain open to hear the call of distress in my sister and brother. Amen
