Feast of St. Jerome, Priest & Doctor of the Church

"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." Matthew 9 : 36

The Good Shepherd is the symbol of the ideal Jewish Leaders,  and these include the high priest,  the chief priests,  Pharisees,  Sadducees and officials of the Synagogue.  Why then does Jesus say that the people are like sheep without a shepherd.  In the Gospel passage alone the people flock to Jesus just to see what He does.  He goes around to all the towns and villages,  preaching,  teaching,  expels demons,  cures people from diseases and illnesses,  and proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdom.  The Pharisees cannot compare with Jesus.  They cannot do what He does,  and all they do is criticise Him,  and see evil in good.

Prayer

God of healing, grant us a heart big enough that we care for people as Jesus did, doing everything in our power to improve the lives of those around us. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen
