"You must love the Lord your God and your neighbour as yourself. " Matthew 24 : 34

In today’s Gospel Jesus summed up the whole law and the prophets in two great commandments: love of God and love of neighbour.  Jesus is the one who shows us how to love God.  The life of Jesus was a continual response of love to the Father who, he knew loved him.  He was God’s beloved.  Jesus advised his followers to “set their hearts on God’s kingdom first, and on God’s saving justice” (Matthew 6 : 33).  We need to follow Jesus closely in everything he says and does and ask him to help us to respond to the Father as he did every time.  Our precept wth regards to love of neighbour is unconditional love, to love ‘as I have loved you’.  The way we respond to this precept of love will affect the whole body of Christ as we are all in communion; though many we are one.  But God knows our limitations and that we are works in progress.  We need a lot of help.  Through the Sacraments, especially the Mass, we come into a living encounter with Jesus, who himself is one with the Father.    As we pray at the Mass, so we pray over our daily life that ‘we may be filled with the Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ.

Jesus our efforts to follow you are often very feeble. In theory we know that we should love God and our neighbour without reserve but in practice it seems impossible especially when we find some people so difficult. Give us the grace to persevere even when our efforts are rejected. Amen
