Prayer of the Day
Feast of St. Martin of Tours, BishopNovember 11th, 2016
At the time when the Gospels were written there was imminent expectation in the Christian communities of the second coming of Christ. In fact many were disappointed that it had not already happened. In today’s Gospel Luke is reminding his community that Jesus said that his second coming would be sudden and unexpected. It would just be like what happened before the Flood. Noah was building the boat in expectation but everyone else was getting on with normal life. It was the same in Lot’s day before fire and brimstone rained down. The coming of the kingdom is already present in Jesus but at his return it will be fully manifested. How we are to fare on that day will depend on how we live the Gospel now. ‘Today’ is the key word. Today is the day to become aware of how the risen Lord, hidden behind the ordinary events of everyday life, becomes the fullness of life for us.
Christ Jesus open our eyes to see your wonders in the people and events of our everyday lives. Amen
