Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Munchin, Bishop of Limerick

January 3rd, 2014
""Think of the love the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's children and that is what we are."" John 2 : 29

St. John here continues his statement by telling us that we are truly God’s children,  the beloved of God,  the ones he holds close to his heart.  Do we really believe this?   Or do we let the Gospel message of God’s great love for us in one ear and out the other.   Our year of faith has just ended.  How has it affected us?  Have we been touched by it?   Has it made any changes in our lives?

Unless we leave ourselves open to God’s love and make a space for him in our hearts,  our faith will not be strong enough to transform our lives.   For faith is tied to love – God’s love.  Only God’s love can change us.  For “God is love and he who lives in God lives in love.”

As Pope Francis points out in his Encyclical on Faith,  love has to be associated with Truth and grounded in Truth.  That love is not the same as the worldly fickle passing emotion that we call love.  No, God’s love for us and our love for God endures for ever and helps us to build a lasting relationship with God who is the light and love of our lives.   As the Pope points out,  faith leads us to a deeper vision of God.   Christ said to Martha at the raising of Lazarus from the dead; “If you believe you will see the Glory of God.”  (John 11 : 40)

Prayer Lord, I believe in you. Help my unbelief. Help me to listen to your voice in my daily life that I may grow ever closer to you. Amen
