Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Muredach, St. Attracta and St. Lelia

August 12th, 2016
"Have you not read that in the beginning God created them male and female? Therefore, a man shall leave father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one body. Let no-one separate what God has joined." Matthew 19 : 5
sunrays

This Gospel passage is common to Mark (10:11), Luke (16:18), and 1 Corinthians  7: 10-11. Jesus here is upholding the principle of lifelong commitment to one’s  partner, irrespective of changing circumstances and based on natural law. In our present world this commitment is sadly lacking, while marriage itself is denigrated. While couples squabble, their children’s development is put on hold, Jesus re-iterates  the need for complete trust and fidelity in marriage. Sometimes, naturally this can be broken and there is need for forgiveness.  Also too, essential factors are not present in the marriage at the beginning, which makes the marriage null and void.

Prayer

We pray for fidelity and mutual respect among couples which will help them towards a life-long commitment to each other. We ask for God’s grace for all those preparing for marriage, and for help in teenagers’ relationships. Amen
