"“You must therefore be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect.”" Matthew 5 : 48

In our 1st reading today, ( 2 Cor. 8. 1-9 ), St. Paul speaks of the need to be generous, even when one has little to give—it means far more in God’s sight.

The call to be perfect issued by Christ is a difficult one. The original Hebrew word meant “whole” or ”integral.”  We are to show the same respect and to value each person not according to our likes/dislikes, but because we are all sons/ daughters of God. As God permits sunshine& rain to fall on everyone irrespectively , so we are called to treat each one in a dispassionate way. Can we love others and treat others well unconditionally, without expecting a reward or feedback?  Even the willingness to do so is a step in the right direction.  If Mandela could say to his former captives:  “Let bygones be bygones,” then why cannot we have the same mentality?

Prayer Let us ask God to help us to treat others kindly, especially those in need, and to forgive from our hearts anyone who has wronged us or those we loved. Amen
