Prayer of the Day

Feast of St. Sixtus II, Pope and St. Cajetan

August 7th, 2014
""You are Peter and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven."" Matthew 16 : 13

In today’s Gospel Jesus asks his followers what people are saying about him. Who do people say he is?  Their answer is that most people think he is a man of God, a prophet, like the prophets of old.  Then Jesus asks a more searching question.  “Who do you say I am?”  In a moment of great inspiration Peter is able to say: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”  In other words Peter at last understands that Jesus is the Messiah.  Jesus told Peter that he was the recipient of a great gift from God -Faith.  At our baptism a seed of faith was planted.  As we grew older that seed, nourished by the faith of those around us, became a tiny delicate shoot.  Our continued prayer and the grace of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, brings our faith to full bloom.  This faith gives our lives purpose and meaning. We are able to say with St. Paul: “I live now not my own life, but the life of Christ who lives in me” (Galatians. 2:20)

Prayer Loving Lord thank you the gift of people who shared their faith with me. Amen
