Prayer of the Day

Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major

August 5th, 2014
""It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles."" Matthew 15 : 2

Jesus came as a disturber of the peace.  He showed up the self-centredness of what passed as religious observance.  The Pharisees and scribes were good people but Jesus couldn’t get through to them.  They were self- righteous and sure of their own salvation. Jesus disturbed their sense of security and they wanted to get rid of him.  In this passage Jesus is trying to tell them, and us, that the words that flow out of our mouth comes from what is in our hearts. If we are filled with the love of God then we will judge mercifully.  Too often we are negative in our criticisms of the faults of others forgetting that we too are imperfect.  We need to turn to the  Lord in our weakness.

Prayer Merciful One create in me a merciful heart so that the words that come from my mouth may bring hope and not despair. Amen
