Feast of the Epiphany

""We came from the East to do the king homage."" Matthew 2 : 2
Kings.jpg

The visit of the Magi to Bethlehem is a fascinating story shrouded in mystery.    Matthew is the only Evangelist  to write about the event.   A ninth century Italian manuscript names the Magi as Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar but some biblical scholars think that there were more than three of them. All we are told by Matthew is that they came from the east because they saw a star rising.  They may have been astrologers who had heard the prophesies of Daniel regarding the Messiah and connected the rising of a new star to the birth of the Messiah.  God used their interest in astrology to lead them on a faith journey to Jesus.  They kept their eyes fixed upon the star and their faith was rewarded with the sight of the newborn king.   What is the star in my life that keeps me focused on God Alone?  How often do I reflect on my faith journey?

Prayer God of the universe we rejoice that we have found the answer to our searching in Jesus, the one who gives meaning and purpose to life. May we always remain open to the immensity of your mystery growing in our sense of wonder for all that is. Keep us travelling the pilgrim way, until finally the journey of discovery is over and we are united with you forever. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
