Prayer of the Day

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

September 14th, 2014
""God so loved the world that he gave his only Son."" John 3 : 16

Today on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross,  we proclaim the good news that God transforms suffering and death into new life.  God handed over his son to die on the Cross to save us,  not to condemn us.  Therefore,  the lifting up of Jesus on the Cross is God’s loving  provision for our salvation.   The Cross has always been a symbol of suffering and death,  and it is also a symbol of hope and courage.  “Tell the world of his love” was the theme song of World Youth Day held in Manila in 1995.  Youth from all over the world gathered together to proclaim the love of God.  What better symbol of love can we get then the symbol of the Cross?   Jesus died on the Cross,  and this is the greatest love the world has known.

This feast also commemorates the finding of the true Cross in 325 by Saint Helena,  mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine,  during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem.  The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built on the site of the discovery by order of Helena and Constantine.  A portion of the true Cross was placed inside it.

Prayer Jesus, enliven and strengthen my faith in the power of your Cross, so that your salvation may transform my life. Amen
