Prayer of the Day

Feast of The Nativity Of John The Baptist

June 24th, 2017
St. John the Baptist

“He asked for a writing tablet and wrote; ‘His name is John.’  And all of them were amazed.  Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed,  and he began to speak, praising God.”  (Luke 1 : 63)

The name John means ‘The Lord has shown favour.’  John the Baptist was a man of self denial,  integrity of life and purpose, and an uncompromising prophetic voice.  This feast relates to the summer solstice,  when the days begin to grow shorter,  recalling John’s words, ‘He must increase, but I must decrease.’
