Prayer of the Day
Feast of the Presentation of the LordFebruary 2nd, 2014
Today is often referred to as ‘the feast of Candlemas’. In obedience to the law of Moses, Jesus was presented in the Temple, where he is greeted by Simeon and Anna. Today’s feast is typified by light. Candles are blessed today. These candles symbolise Jesus, the Light of the world, our eternal light, the inspiration that the Gospel is to be a light to the nations.
The fulfilment of Malachi’s words comes when Jesus is presented in the Temple. In presenting their Child in the Temple, Mary and Joseph were acting in accordance with the law of the Lord, as given to Moses. Jesus was integrally absorbed into our human race. He is revealed to us as a revealing light, the glory of Israel. The flame of this candle will spread over the earth. In blessing Joseph and Mary, said that this Child was destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel.
This candle, the Lord, is taken into our homes and communities, a reminder that it will light our way into the year ahead. Jesus, the Light of the world, returns with Mary and Joseph to light up their humble home at Nazareth.
