Prayer of the Day

Fifth Sunday of Easter

May 18th, 2014
"”I am the Way, the Truth and the Life …”" John 14 : 6

The liturgy today and for the rest of the week presents us with excerpts from the Last Supper given to us by St. John.  In John’s Gospel there is no institutional narrative but it is full of Eucharistic symbolism.   In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus trying to ease the fear and terror that his followers are about to experience in a very short space of time.  He knows that the scandal of the cross is going to be a very severe testing time for them.  So far they have journeyed with a man obviously blessed by God but now it will seem that God is abandoning him. So he tells them to “trust in God still, and to trust in him.”  Shortly afterwards he gives them the reason for this trust – his intimate relationship with the Father.  Jesus is totally surrendered to the Father so that every word he says is the Father’s word and every action he does is the Father’s action.  He says to Philip, “to have seen me is to have seen the Father.”  No other spiritual teacher can make this claim.  As we hear or read this Gospel today the words of Jesus are personally addressed to us.   Each one of us is being invited into the deep relationship that exists between the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit.  In order to enter into this relationship we must undertake a journey with Jesus, who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life”

Prayer Eternal Father, your son Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life for all. Help us to walk in his way, rejoice in his truth and share in his risen life. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen
