Prayer of the Day
Fifth Sunday of the Year – Day of Prayer for Victims of Human TraffickingFebruary 8th, 2015
On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew. Now Simon’s mother-in-law had gone to bed with a fever and they told him about her straightaway. He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.
The Gospel detail is very vivid, the illness is described. Peter’s Mother -in – law is very ill with a fever. Jesus goes to her takes by the hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. The miracle takes place in the house of Simon and Andrew .The day is very eventful for Jesus as he continues into the evening with his healing. Large crowds of people were brought to him for healing. He cured many of them who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils. He did not allow them to speak they knew who he was. There is ambiguity around this and difference of opinion .The disciples being present, could be one reason for the prohibition, why Jesus did not allow the devils to make him known. They needed more time to know their dying and triumphant Messiah.
Jesus withdrew to pray, places the healing miracles in perspective. He was up early before dawn left the house and went to a lonely place to pray away from the people. He was missed, Simon and his companions went look for him, and when they found him they said ‘’everyone is looking for you’’ He answered, ‘’ Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.’’ Jesus’ missionary origin is very present. And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.
