May 19th, 2015Here, Paul is saying a tearful, final goodbye to the Elders of the Church of Ephesus. This journey will take him to Jerusalem where he will suffer much at the hands of the leading Jews. On appealing to Caesar, as a Roman citizen, he is sent to Rome. There, he is a house prisoner for two years, but free to preach the Gospel. Finally, he was beheaded on 29th June 67 AD. Paul was happy to die for the love of the Christ whom he first met so many years before this, on his way to Damascus. For Paul, “to live was to know Christ and him crucified.” For Paul, as well as for us, to follow Christ has never been easy. And Christ never said it would. Like Paul and all Christ’s followers, “Whoever will be my disciple must take up his cross and follow me.” “The disciple is not above his master.”
