Prayer of the Day
“Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.”December 9th, 2013
Today the liturgy introduces us to Mary. Advent is a special time of Marian spirituality and devotion. In his encyclical, Marialis Cultus, Paul V1 invited us to take Mary as model during Advent as we prepare to meet the Lord who is to come. He suggests that we should first of all notice how Mary carefully listened to the message of the angel which was the word of God in her heart and how she unhesitatingly said ‘yes’ to that word. He asked us to take note of Mary’s prayer in the Magnificat as we hear her praise and glorify God for all his works. But above all, he said, that Mary is an “example of that worship that consists in making one’s life an offering to God.” St. Louis de Montfort suggested that because Mary is the person “most conformed to Jesus Christ” it follows that “we should give ourselves entirely to Mary in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her.” John Paul 11’s deep devotion to Mary was inspired by Louis de Montfort’s work True Devotion to Mary.
