Prayer of the Day
Tenth Week in Ordinary TimeJune 10th, 2014
At Pentecost, we celebrate the birthday of the Church. The Apostles are commissioned to go out to the whole world to continue the mission of Jesus. The dynamic power of the Spirit reveals itself in the miraculous spread of the Gospel so quickly throughout the then known world. The words of Gerald Manley Hopkins, the Jesuit poet 1844 – 1889, come to mind; “Because the Holy Ghost over the bent world broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings. (God’s Grandeur written in 1877)
The human race is raised to a new level in the Spirit. Jesus’ mission on earth has been completed. The mission of the Church is only beginning. When Jesus was baptised in the river Jordan, John the Baptist saw the Spirit of God descending on Him. This is the Spirit we received at our Baptism.
The work of the early Christians was not an easy task. There was often strong opposition to the spread of the Gospel message. The power of evil resisted the power of the Spirit. The early Christians suffered persecution and death. As Christ had foretold, they would be “hated by men and suffer death for the sake of the Gospel.” Let us rejoice and be glad that we are God’s chosen Apostles to-day. Are we like the early Christians ready to spread God’s message of love among the people with whom we live?
