"Your Father will not forgive you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart. " Matthew 18 : 21

Forgiveness is a theme that pervades the whole Gospel from the Sermon on the Mount right down to Jesus’ petition from the Cross: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34).   Today Matthew gives us the parable of the unforgiving servant.  Jesus told this parable because of a question put to him by Peter.  Thinking himself rather generous and heroic Peter asked Jesus should he forgive someone who offended him seven times.  Jesus’ answer implied that willingness to forgive should be unlimited.   The high-ranking servant in the parable was forgiven a huge debt by his master but he himself refused to forgive one of his fellow servants a small debt.  The parables help us to see ourselves.  Like the servant who begged his master to forgive him him his huge debt we ask God to forgive us our many sins but we find it very hard to forgive each other for even minor offences.  We have no real grasp of the mercy that God showers on us every day.  Only in Jesus crucified can we learn to forgive as he forgave his enemies.

Prayer

Lord Jesus you forgave those who crucified you; give us the grace to put no limits on our forgiveness of others. Amen
