Prayer of the Day

Third Week of Lent – Feast of St. Kieran

March 5th, 2016
"The tax-collector went home again at rights with God; the Pharisee did not. " Luke 18 : 9

Sometimes we wonder about the best method of prayer because there are so many different opinions on the subject.  Through the medium of a very powerful parable, the Pharisee and the tax-collector, Jesus gives us his answer.  For him the most important thing we should bring to prayer is a humble and contrite heart.  Unlike the Pharisee who congratulated himself on his good works and sinlessness we should take with us the attitude of the tax-collector who realised that he was a sinner in great need of God’s mercy.  His prayer was simple and straightforward; “God be merciful to me, a sinner.”   We would do well to make it our own during this Year of Mercy.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner. Amen
