Prayer of the Day
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeJune 28th, 2015
To-day’s Gospel tells us the beautiful story of a woman who having suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years and failed to find any remedy for her complaint puts her faith in Jesus. Because of her condition this poor woman would have been considered ritually unclean so in no way could she approach Our Lord to ask for healing. But she believed that she would be healed if she could only touch the hem of his garment. The opportunity arose when Jesus was on his way to the home of Jairus whose little daughter was seriously ill. With a large crowd pressing around him this woman was able to slip up unnoticed and touch his cloak. The bleeding stopped at once and knowing she was healed she was about to slip away when Our Lord turned round and asked who had touched him. He obviously wanted to encounter the person whose faith had obtained this miracle. The woman, knowing she had broken the Jewish ritual law concerning the `impure` came trembling with fear and falling at Our Lord’s feet told him the whole story. What joy must have filled her heart when Jesus addressed her as daughter and commended her for her faith. No wonder she could now go in peace having been healed physically and emotionally.
This woman’s faith challenges us. When we receive Holy Communion we are much closer to Our Lord than she was. He lives within us and invites us to tell him our story so that he can help us grow in his likeness.
Lord we believe you are with us always. Deepen our faith in your presence and in your power to heal us of all our infirmities. Amen
